Taika Waititi: "I want to hear the noise and cacophony on the set" No. 1

Until recently, New Zealand director Taika Waititi was known only in the circles of independent filmmakers. This eccentric author shot a pseudo-documentary about vampires, explored the difficult relationships between adults and teenagers, admired the beauty of New Zealand's wild reserves, and invented his own kind of "awkward comedy," but he always remained within his native small continent.

Being already in the status of the new hope of the Marvel cinematic universe, Taika Waititi talks about her impressions of filming the movie "Thor: Ragnarok" and the transition from low-budget movies to blockbusters.

What attracted you to this project?

The most attractive thing to me was the chance to plunge into another world, into another culture. Obviously, this is the Asgardian culture that I have been a fan of for many years. As a child, I always dreamed of becoming a space Viking, of being an Asgardian. I'm a big fan of the Marvel cinematic universe, as well as the Marvel Comic Universe. I've always been a fan of Thor, Odin, and his extended family.

I have a fairly modest background, I'm better known as an indie director, an author working with a more modest budget. I can say that I've left my mark on the world and I think I'm ready to expand now. As the universe, or Marvel Universe, expands, so do my creative needs as a director and storyteller. That's why I'm here.

What approach did you choose for the painting?

Although I definitely have a more comedic approach, I like making films that have a balance between what will look very funny and what "has a heart" that resonates with the audience on a deeper level.

I thought that the approach to this film would be very different from the first two pictures about Thor. Marvel supported me in this. Another thing that drew my attention to the project is that Marvel set out to change the franchise. They wanted to redirect Thor in a new direction, place him in outer space with a minimum of time spent on Earth. They wanted to make the hero fun and enjoyable.

Tell us about the influence of Jack Kirby? (Artist, author of "Thor" - ed.)

Jack Kirby is a big part of this film, his influence is present in the development of many Sakaarian elements. He's a huge hero for all of us. Kirby has created so many incredible characters and designs, ships and costumes. We were very inspired by his work while working on the film. It was a great honor to honor him in the new "Thor".
